Westport’s Paliotta signs with Rangers
June saw Michael Paliotta win a championship, then be let go. July, though, started off pretty well: The defenseman agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New York Rangers on Friday as NHL free agency opened.
“I’m really excited about it,” said Paliotta, who’s from Westport. “Obviously, growing up following the Rangers, they were the team I always rooted for.”
The Rangers are Paliotta’s third organization in a whirlwind year. He was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, signed with them in Spring 2015, was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets a year ago and then not tendered a contract by Monday’s deadline.
As an unrestricted free agent, he winds up close to home, whether he’s with the Rangers or with their AHL team in Hartford.
