Boys golf: Watertown’s Thompson repeats as Luther Prep Invitational champ
Watertown senior Alex Thompson defended his 2017 title at the Luther Prep Invitational at Windwood on Monday, firing a 36 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine for a medalist round of 73.
Thompson was in position to eagle twice on par 5s, but narrowly missed the putts.
“Alex Thompson’s steady play, and his ability to reach most of the par 5’s in two allowed him to be medalist for the second year in a row in this tourney, shooting a fine 73,” Watertown boys golf coach Gene Frank said.
The Goslings finished third overall with a 365. Mike Travis shot 93 (41-52), Griffin Meyer shot 98 (45-53), Calvin Marks shot 101 (49-52) and Caden Fredrick shot 104 (53-51).
“Our team hit a lot of good shots,” Frank said.
Luther Prep’s varsity placed second overall with a 335 score, led by three top 10 medalists.
Steve Biebert placed third with a 78 (36-42). Dan Nitardy placed seventh with an 82 (39-43). John Fix placed tenth with an 86 (42-44).
Kyle Lindemann shot 89 (45-44) and Andrew Wilke shot 90 (43-47) for Luther Prep’s other scores.
“They took advantage of the home course,” Luther Prep golf coach Ken Taylor said of his trio of medalists. This sets us up really well for the final and definitive mini meet we are hosting.”
Luther Prep hosts the final conference mini-meet today at Windwood at 3:30 p.m. Five teams are within five points of one another in the league standings.
The Phoenix then travel to Watertown’s next event, its host invitational at the Watertown Country Club on Thursday at 10 a.m.
