Expired license plates catch officer’s attention
NORFOLK — Two men were arrested for a range of drug offenses in Norfolk following a traffic stop last week.
Capt. Mike Bauer of the Norfolk Police Division said a Norfolk officer stopped a vehicle that had expired license plates on Wednesday morning. The officer had contact with the driver who was identified as Dennis I. Wiese, 49, no address listed.
A passenger of the vehicle was identified as Joey J. Colwell, 53, Norfolk. A check of Colwell’s record showed that he had three active Madison County arrest warrants, Bauer said.
In a subsequent search, officers recovered a glass pipe with burnt residue near where Colwell was sitting. The residue reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine.
Another glass pipe that reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine was also recovered from Wiese, along with a small amount of marijuana.
Bauer said both men were interviewed and arrested. Colwell was arrested on the warrants and for possession of a controlled substance. Wiese was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, no valid registration, no proof of insurance, possession of marijuana (less than 1 ounce), and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both men were housed in the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.
