22-year-old runner collapses at Cleveland Marathon, dies
CLEVELAND (AP) — A 22-year-old woman running in the Cleveland Marathon has collapsed and died.
University Hospitals spokesman George Stamatis says Taylor Ceepo collapsed at Sunday’s race and was dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Cuyahoga (cy-uh-HOH’-guh) County Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday that the cause of the Medina woman’s death hadn’t been determined.
The Akron Beacon Journal reported Cristine Torek, a public relations specialist for the marathon, said Ceepo collapsed as she was nearly finished with the race. The estimated 15,000 runners had been told they could run or walk as temperatures reached the 80s.
A statement Monday from executive race director Jack Staph said marathon officials are “looking into the situation.”
Walsh University in North Canton said Ceepo graduated this spring and had been on the women’s soccer team.
