Student charged, suspended following locker room attack
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a Florida middle school student has been arrested and suspended after a video went viral of him attacking another student in a locker room.
Lakeland police Cpt. Steve Pacheco said during a news conference Thursday that the Blake Academy student has been charged with misdemeanor battery. Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Jacqueline Byrd added that the boy also has been suspended for 10 days, though it wasn’t known whether he’d be allowed to return to Blake after his suspension. Three other boys heard in the video cheering on the attacker have also been disciplined.
Officials say the attack occurred Monday and was reported to school staff about an hour later. Pacheco says the school resource officer immediately began to investigate.
Byrd says school officials are investigating the teacher who was responsible for supervising the students.
