Area baseball sectional pairings
The area baseball sectional draw was announced by the IHSAA on Sunday night.
La Porte faces South Bend Riley in a Class 4A Plymouth Sectional opener, and Michigan City plays Mishawaka at Plymouth in another opener. New Prairie meets John Glenn in the first round of the Class 3A Mishawaka Marian Sectional, while three-time defending sectional-champion South Central faces Argos in a Class A South Bend Career Academy Sectional opener. LaCrosse plays Triton in another opener at South Bend Career Academy, and Marquette meets the host Senators in a Class A Washington Township Sectional opener. In the same sectional at WT, Westville faces Gary 21st Century. Sectionals run May 22‐27 with winners moving into a two‐game regional on June 1.
Westville baseball drops pair in classic
Westville’s baseball team fell 5-4 to Hammond Academy, then lost 9-2 to Victory Christian Academy in Saturday’s South Central Spring Classic. Versus Hammond, W.V.’s Blake Henderson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Trevor Henckel was 1-of-2 with an RBI. Andrew Kreighbaum took the loss, allowing five runs, one earned, on five hits in seven innings. He earned 11 strikeouts and had one walk. Against VCA, Jackson Shreves went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Henckel was 1-of-3 with a run scored. Preston Lake took the loss, giving up nine runs, three earned, in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out a pair and walked three. Jackson Nowatzke threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings, fanning seven and walking two.
NP boys track earns three firsts at Valpo
Jacob Corbett (3,200-meter run), Hunter Smith (discus) and Dalton Thomas (pole vault) registered firsts for the New Prairie boys track team in Friday’s Valpo Relays. Corbett’s time of 9 minutes, 35.57 second was an 11-second personal best and the seventh-fastest time in the event in school history. Smith’s winning toss was 138 feet, 10 inches, while Thomas cleared 12-6. Tim O’Laughlin (1,600) and Chris Mays (400) took seconds, while Broc Boniface (shot put) and Thomas/Gage VanSchoyck (high jump) claimed thirds.
Area prep athletic schedule changes
La Porte’s baseball home game on Monday with Boone Grove has been cancelled due to respective conference makeups. La Porte will play at New Prairie in softball on Monday at 4:30 p.m. in an added game for both teams. Slicers’ JV softball will host New Prairie on Monday at 4:30 p.m. L.P. softball has also added a varsity softball doubleheader on May 18 at 10 a.m. at Carroll (Fort Wayne). Friday’s Marquette softball game at Illiana Christian was cancelled due to field conditions. Michigan City’s baseball game at Chesterton was bumped to Monday for the same reason. The Wolves’ home game with the Trojans has been moved to Thursday.
Slicers JV baseball drops DAC decision
La Porte’s JV baseball team fell 12-7 to visiting Lake Central on Friday night at Schreiber Field. The Slicers’ Jared Pinkerton went 3-for-4, and Camrin Worthington took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked four. Jack McGuire threw the last 3 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and five walks.
Slicers JV softball downs Satellites
La Porte’s JV softball team cruised 14-2 in five innings over South Central in LP on Saturday morning. The Slicers’ Peyton Harlow went 3-for-3 with a triple, and Ella Wheatbrook was 2-of-2. Becca Marxman and Alyssa Bruemmer also both went 2-for-2. Madison McGuire pitched the complete game.
Leadership La Porte County Golf Outing
The Leadership La Porte County 17th Annual Golf Outing will be May 17 from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Michigan City Municipal Golf Course. Join them for a day of fun and support Leadership La Porte County by registering your team today. Each team will participate in a shotgun start, best ball scramble event. There will be prizes for the top performers, lunch and many great door prizes. Cost to attend is $300 per team. Purchase a tee sign for $100.
La Porte Baseball Summer Camp in June
The La Porte Slicer baseball coaching staff and players will conduct the annual summer baseball camp June 10-June 13 for students currently in Kindergarten through fifth grade, at Schreiber Field. Times are: K-second grade, 10-11:25 a.m.; and third-fifth grade, 11:30 a.m.-12:55 p.m. Cost of the camp will be $40 per player. Players should wear tennis shoes or cleats, shorts, sweat pants, or baseball pants and a T-shirt. Players should bring baseball gloves. Instructors will be La Porte High School baseball players and coaches. Registration due date is June 4. Players will receive a T-shirt, but they can’t assure T-shirt sizes on late registrations.
