Rams Sign Veteran Punter Berger
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Free agent punter Mitch Berger agreed to terms Wednesday on a one-year contract with the St. Louis Rams.
Berger, a seven-year veteran, played the last six years with the Minnesota Vikings after beginning his career in 1994 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He did not play in the NFL in 1995.
Berger has a career average of 43.2 yards and a streak of 344 punts without a block.
The last three seasons, Berger has 47 punts of 50 or more yards.
Last year, he played in 12 games and averaged 43.5 yards before being placed on injured reserve with knee and neck injuries. He tied for second in the NFC and for seventh in the NFL in punting average.
Berger made the Pro Bowl after the 1999 season, when he led the NFC with a 45.4-yard average.
John Baker, the Rams’ punter the last two years, averaged 42.1 yards on 43 attempts in 2001. He’s still on the roster.
