Senate prays that Trump will sign spending bill

February 14, 2019

As the Senate convened Thursday, senators prayed literally that President Trump will sign the new spending bill to avoid a government shutdown.

After a guest chaplain led the chamber in the usual opening prayer Senate President Pro Tempore Charles E. Grassley added an addendum: “Let’s all pray that the president will have wisdom to sign the bill so government doesn’t shut down.”

Mr. Trump’s decision on whether to sign the bill is the dominant question on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers struck a compromise that gives him a “down payment” on border wall money and flexibility on detaining illegal immigrants, but with some restrictions on where and what kind of fencing can be built with the border wall cash.
