Sean Payton tells Dan Patrick Show he doesn’t know if he sees a player like Patrick Mahomes in 2018 quarterback class
Saints coach Sean Payton made headlines last week when he told The MMQB’s Peter King that he wasn’t sure if he saw an Andrew Luck or a Carson Wentz in the much-ballyhooed 2018 class of quarterbacks.
Payton doubled down on those comments in an interview with The Dan Patrick Show Monday.
While Payton acknowledged that he believes USC’s Sam Darnold will have a good NFL career, he’s not sure if he’d put any of the quarterbacks on the level the Saints had Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes last year.
“With regards to the quarterback class this year, this is just us, the Saints, the guy we had graded very high last year was Mahomes,” Payton said. “I don’t know that I see that player in this class.”
Kansas City traded ahead of New Orleans to take Mahomes at No. 10, but if the Bills had taken Lattimore, the Texas Tech quarterback would be a Saint, according to Payton.
“We would have taken Mahomes,” Payton said. “And had both of them been there, we would have taken Lattimore. We had the higher grade on the corner.”
