Longtime Somerset County auditor Jerry Lyons announced his intention Monday to seek a fifth full term in office.

Lyons, 60, a Republican from Somerset Township, said he believes experience is important.

Members of the three-person board serve as citizen watchdogs for county government offices.

“I enjoy the position,” he said. “I have the experience that it takes. I’ve learned a lot about the office (in the) last four terms, and I am qualified to service the county and do another term.”

Lyons has worked as a Somerset County auditor since 2003. He was appointed to fill a vacancy in the office in March 2003, then was elected to the job.

“It takes time to learn about the various methods of bookkeeping in the various offices within the county,” he said. “Having served in the position, I have the advantage of that experience.”

Lyons said the office is responsible for auditing, adjusting and settling accounts of all the county offices and reporting findings.

“It’s a position I take seriously,” Lyons said. “Our focus includes all the county row offices, district magistrate offices, tax collectors, airport, hazmat and other county government operations.

Lyons currently serves as recording secretary and is a past president of the Somerset Volunteer Fire Department and Somerset Volunteer Fire Department Relief Association. He has achieved the 33rd degree in Freemasonry, and is a past district deputy in Somerset and Cambria counties for the Pennsylvania Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, past master of the Somerset Masonic Lodge, past president of the Somerset County Scottish Rite Club, past officer in the Somerset County Shrine Club, past presiding officer in the Valley of Altoona AASR and past treasurer of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1801 in Somerset. He serves on the advisory council of the Somerset County Local Emergency Planning Committee and is a past council member for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Somerset County.

He is a 1976 graduate of Somerset Area High School, a 1988 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and a 1991 graduate of Point Park University in Pittsburgh with a master of arts degree in journalism and communications.

Previous to his term as county auditor, Lyons was employed as an announcer and program director for the former WVSC AM and FM radio stations in Somerset, a news producer for WJAC-TV in Johnstown and an assignment editor for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. He works part time as a substitute teacher in the Somerset Area School District.

“I have the skills and educational background to continue serving in the auditor’s position,” he said. “I ask the voters of Somerset County for their support in the upcoming elections.”
