Pregame: Alexi Amarista optioned to El Paso

July 3, 2016

To make room for Andrew Cashner’s return from the disabled list, the Padres have optioned infielder Alexi Amarista back to Triple-A El Paso.

Amarista was hitting .256/.280/.319 with six RBIs and two extra-base hits in 41 games in a part-time role. With the team committed to getting a good look at Ryan Schimpf at second base and the All-Star break around the corner, the Padres are going with an extra arm on the roster for the time being.

Right-handers Paul Clemens and Jose Dominguez joined the Padres this weekend, giving Padres Manager Andy Green an eight-man bullpen for the time being.

Game 3: 1:40 p.m. Sunday

Yankees RHP Chad Green (0-1, 7.20 ERA)

The 25-year-old rookie was 6-6 with a 1.54 ERA, 82 strikeouts and a 0.98 WHIP in 81 2/3 innings in Triple-A. He allowed six runs – four earned – in four innings in his lone start at Arizona on May 16 and pitched a clean inning out of the ’pen last month.

Padres RHP Andrew Cashner (3-5, 4.75 ERA)

Cashner is making his first start since a neck strain forced him from June 10 start Colorado after just six pitches. The Padres will make a roster move before the game to clear space for Cashner.
