K’s notes: Keep an eye on Avs’ net
Fans of the Komets may want to keep a close watch on the Colorado Avalanche the rest of the season -- I mean, if you can stomach watching a team that’s an NHL-worst 13-31-2 -- because former Komets goaltender Spencer Martin is likely to be with the Avs for the duration.
The Avs’ top goalie, Semyon Varlamov, is out for the season with a hip injury. Calvin Pickard is, therefore, atop the depth chart but he’s anything but a sure thing.
Martin, 21, has an 0-1-1 NHL record with an .857 save percentage. He has spent most of the season in the American Hockey League with San Antonio.
-- Here’s an update on this season’s Komets now in the AHL: Shawn Szydlowski has one goal and a plus-3 rating in six games for Cleveland; Trevor Cheek has three assists and a minus-1 rating in 20 games for Tucson; and Bobby Shea is scoreless and plus-3 with seven penalty minutes in 10 games for Rochester.
Cheek is probably the least likely of the three to return to Fort Wayne, which plays host to Rapid City on Friday at Memorial Coliseum. That will be the only meeting of the season between the Komets and Rush.
-- The Komets’ Mason Baptista has scored a goal in six straight games. Only two players, Rapid City’s Lindsay Sparks and Allen’s Bryan Moore, have had streaks as long this season. That could make things awfully interesting Friday, though Rapid City plays at Cincinnati on Wednesday. The most important part of Baptista’s streak, other than him being a third-liner, is that he’s scored in five straight road games. Only one other league player has had a longer road streak: Colorado’s Luke Salazar, who scored in six straight road games. Raise your hand if you thought Bapista would have 11 goals and 19 points in 34 games this season? He’s fifth on the team in goals, behind only Szydlowski (21), Kyle Thomas (21), Mike Cazzola (16) and Garrett Thompson (12).
