Former Colorado councilman pleads guilty to felony theft
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — A former Aspen councilman and ski company executive has pleaded guilty to felony theft between $100,000 and $1 million.
Aspen Daily News reported Monday that 52-year-old Derek Johnson entered his plea after authorities say he sold SkiCo skis and snowboards on eBay between June 2013 and January 2019.
Prosecutors say Johnson faces up to 12 years in prison, with five years of mandatory parole and $250,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors say Johnson was arrested in April and originally faced felony theft of more than $1 million and multiple other charges that were dropped as part of the plea deal.
Johnson served on Aspen City Council from 2009 to 2013 and ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor in 2013.
Johnson said Monday during his court appearance that he made some poor choices.
