Ex-corrections officer gets 7-year sentence for child porn
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A former New Jersey corrections officer who admitted distributing child porn has been sentenced to seven years in state prison.
Michael Ruggiero, 38, of Lacey Township, will also have to serve five years of supervised release under the sentence imposed Wednesday.
Federal prosecutors said that during a three-day period in April 2016, Ruggiero used a mobile chat application to distribute child porn images and videos. Some of the items showed children under the age of 12.
Ruggiero also received child porn through the app and had additional depictions of child sexual abuse on his cellphone when he was arrested in June 2017. He pleaded guilty last June to distributing child porn
Ruggiero was a senior corrections officer at the Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility in Chesterfield, a state Department of Corrections prison for young adult offenders. He was arrested after police in Canada arrested a man on a parole violation who then told investigators that he had used the app to distribute pornography to other people.
