Davonte Fitzgerald leaving Gophers basketball, will play senior season elsewhere
Gophers forward Davonte Fitzgerald will transfer to another basketball program for his final year of eligibility, the school announced Monday.
Fitzgerald played one season for Minnesota, appearing in 31 games this past season as a junior with four starts. He averaged 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds in 13.3 minutes per game.
Fitzgerald earned his bachelor’s degree in communication studies in December and can now transfer to another program without sitting out a season, per NCAA rules.
“Davonte has been an outstanding member of our program through his time here, and I’m sure he will go on to great things both next year and beyond in his career,” coach Richard Pitino said in a statement.
Before this season, Fitzgerald missed the 2016-17 Gophers season with a knee injury and missed the prior season due to NCAA transfer rules. He began his college career at Texas AM, spending two seasons (2013-14, 2014-15) with the Aggies.
