Jury selection must start anew after young adults excluded

April 18, 2019

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Jury selection must be started over for a man charged in the death of a Louisiana police officer because some young adults were unintentionally excluded from the jury pool.

Grover Cannon is charged with first-degree murder in the 2015 shooting death of Shreveport police officer Thomas LaValley.

Jury selection was moved to East Baton Rouge Parish because of pre-trial publicity in the Shreveport area. But Louisiana news outlets report that a computer glitch was discovered in the East Baton Rouge system that prevented people under age 26 from being summoned as potential jurors.

On Thursday, Louisiana’s Supreme Court said the original jury pool for Cannon’s case must be tossed and jury selection must start anew because anyone born after June 2, 1993 was unintentionally excluded from the pool.
