2 Mississippi inmates die in Jackson hospital
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two inmates from Central Mississippi Correctional Facility died Monday in a Jackson hospital, and the state Department of Corrections said autopsies will be done.
The department said in a news release that foul play was not suspected in either death.
Willie Terrell Leflore, 69, was serving a 20-year sentence for sexual battery in DeSoto County. He was sentenced March 19, 2019.
Joseph Whitehead, 45, was convicted of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Washington County. He was sentenced to 25 years on April 4, 2016.
Leflore and Whitehead died at Merit Health Central.
At least 69 inmates have died in Mississippi prisons since late December. The U.S. Justice Department announced in February that it is investigating Mississippi’s prison system. Several inmates died during outbursts of violence in late December and early January.
