Cal Quantrill debuts; 3 El Paso All-Stars

The eighth overall selection earlier this month, Cal Quantrill made his professional debut Thursday in the Arizona Rookie League. In a 6-4 loss to the Angels’ team, the 21-year-old right-hander struck out two and allowed two hits over two scoreless innings in his first in-game action since a 2015 Tommy John procedure effective ended his career at Stanford.

Quantrill had not pitched competitively since his surgery when the Padres inked him to a $3.96 million signing bonus.

Right-hander Henry Henry (0-1, 2.45) allowed four unearned runs in 2 ½ innings and right-hander Brandon Morrow allowed an unearned in his first action in more than a month.

Hudson Potts (.314), Fernando Tatis Jr. (.353) and Dayon Olmo (.318) each had two hits and Potts stole his fourth base.

Chihuahuas 8, Reno 6: 1B Hector Sanchez (.545) drove in four runs on two home runs and CF Manuel Margot (.298) hit his fourth homer. Margot, C Austin Hedges (.385) and SS Diego Goris (.381) each had two hits and RHP Michael Kelly (3-0, 3.71) struck out six and allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Before the game, RF Hunter Renfroe (.325), 2B Carlos Asuaje (.319) and INF Casey McElroy (.307) were named to the Triple-A All-Star Game, which will be televised July 13 on MLB Network.

Missions 6, Tulsa 2: Promoted to the Texas League on Thursday, CF Franchy Cordero went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, a walk, two runs scored and a steal. 1B Gabriel Quintana (.247) hit his eighth homer and drove in two runs on two hits and RHP Kyle Lloyd (3-3, 4.29) struck out four and allowed a run on four hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings.

Lancaster 5, Storm 1: RHP Enyel De Los Santos (4.58) struck out three over five scoreless innings. SS Luis Urias (.325), CF Michael Gettys (.412), DH Ricardo Valenzuela (.348) and C A.J. Kennedy (.400) each had two hits, and Gettys swiped his third base.

Dayton 4, TinCaps 2: RHP Austin Smith (5.15) struck out six over five scoreless innings in the start. SS Ruddy Giron (.189) went 1-for-4 with his fourth steal and scored a run.

Dust Devils 4, Vancouver 3: C Chris Mattison (.200) drove in two runs on his first homer and SS Chris Baker (.233) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. RHP Diomar Lopez (2-0, 1.59) turned in three scoreless innings in relief for the win.

Blue Jays 2, Padres 1: LHP Omar Fernandez (0.00) struck out four and scattered four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in the start. SS Luis Guzman (.245) hit his first homer.
