Des Hasler returns to Brookvale as Manly coach

October 22, 2018

SYDNEY (AP) — Des Hasler has signed a three-year contract to return as head coach to Manly, where won two National Rugby League premierships as coach and two top-flight premierships as a player.

Hasler had an acrimonious exit from Manly after guiding the club to the 2011 NRL title before moving to Canterbury. He was the Bulldogs’ head coach for six seasons but despite guiding the team to two grand finals, was unable to deliver an NRL title.

Manly placed next-to-last in the 2018 NRL season after Trent Barrett announced in July he planned to quit as coach.

“You learn in rugby league very soon that all things are possible,” Hasler said of his return to Brookvale Oval. “I really missed coaching this year. I’m looking forward to just getting back into that day-to-day ... interaction.”

Hasler spent most of his playing career at Manly as a halfback or utility player, winning top-tier premierships in 1987 and 1996. He also represented Australia and played for New South Wales in the annual State of Origin series against Queensland.
