Tennessee man accused of holding kids hostage for drug money
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee man is accused of stabbing a woman on Easter and then holding her kids hostage for drug money.
News outlets report 25-year-old Ernest Owens is charged with offenses including aggravated kidnapping and child abuse. Memphis police say Owens arrived at a woman’s house early Sunday morning and asked for $10 for crack. They say the woman refused and Owens brandished a steak knife that he then pressed into each child’s skin.
Police say the woman attempted to protect the children and was stabbed in the thigh. Police say she fled and Owens stayed behind, holding the children hostage while police arrived.
It’s unclear how the children were freed. The woman was taken to a hospital and Owens was arrested. It’s unclear how he and the woman are connected.
