Residents want answers after police shooting of woman

April 17, 2019

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Residents are calling for answers from police after two officers opened fire at a car and wounded a woman in New Haven.

State police say a Hamden officer and a Yale University officer shot at the driver of a car who was suspected in an attempted robbery in neighboring Hamden early Tuesday and wounded a 22-year-old woman in the car. Her wounds are not life-threatening.

Police say the driver failed to follow officers’ commands and got out of the car abruptly. He was not injured.

Residents and religious leaders rallied Tuesday evening and demanded to know why the Hamden officer was in New Haven, why the Yale officer was involved and why New Haven police were not notified.

Officials declined to answer those questions. They promised a thorough investigation.
