Winter storm watch begins tonight

January 12, 2019

Daily Journal staff report

Winter officially arrived three weeks ago today, but you haven’t been able to tell by looking out the window or venturing outside.

That’s about to change.

A winter weather advisory has been established for the region from midnight until 9 p.m. Saturday. According to AccuWeather, 3 to 7 inches of snow will fall before it’s over. Larger amounts are expected around and south of U.S. Route 24, and smaller amounts are anticipated around and north of Interstate 80.

The Kankakee area hasn’t seen measurable snow since late November.

Areas south of Kankakee and Iroquois counties are in more challenging conditions. Champaign and Springfield face a winter storm warning and the possibility of 8 to 9 inches of snowfall.

But our northern neighbors are expected to see less snow, as 1 to 2 inches are predicted for Chicago.
