Star Wars-themed land to open at Disneyland next summer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- You won’t have to travel to a galaxy far, far away to get the full “Star Wars” experience.

Disney announced its “Star Wars” themed-land at Disneyland in California will open during the summer of 2019. Walt Disney World parkgoers in Florida will have to wait a little longer - until late fall of next year -- for the attraction to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The themed-land is called Galaxy’s Edge. Set on the shipping port planet of Batuu, the section of the park is meant to be a completely immersive experience. Guests will interact with Disney employees in full character, dressed as the scoundrels, rebels and aliens of the “Star Wars” world. Visitors will even get a chance to pilot the famous Millennium Falcon, while another ride puts them in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

Though Disney is opening Galaxy Edge’s at both of its resorts in North America, they won’t be identical. The Florida version will include a fully interactive hotel disguised as a starship on a voyage through space.

The “Star Wars”-themed land will be the culmination of a massive expansion at Walt Disney World. Pandora: The World of Avatar opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom last year, while Toy Story Land is scheduled to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on June 30.

In the meantime, aspiring Jedi can still ride the Star Tours attraction at both Disneyland and Disney World.
