AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ Detroit Shock coach Greg Williams was fired Wednesday following the team’s 0-10 start _ the worst in WNBA history.
The announcement was made in a news release, which said a new coach would be named at a news conference at 1 p.m. EDT.
Williams led the Shock to a 10-22 record in 2001, his inaugural season as coach and player personnel director.
One candidate to replace Williams reportedly is former Detroit Pistons center Bill Laimbeer, who is in his first season as a special consultant to the Shock.
Laimbeer played 13 seasons for the Pistons, helping them win consecutive NBA titles in 1989 and 1990 and earning All-Star honors four times. He is the club’s career rebounding leader and is fifth in career scoring.
