Winfield pounds Wayne in AA sectional, 83-53

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Zach Simpkins scored 20 and Christian Frye fired in 18 as No. 3-seed Winfield blew past sixth-seeded Wayne in the Class AA, Region IV, Section 1 tournament Tuesday night in Winfield.

Hunter Morris chipped in 17 points for the Generals (11-12), who jumped out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter. Nick Bryant notched 24 points to pace the Pioneers (4-19) and Benton Daniels knocked down seven 3-pointers for 21 points.

Winfield travels to No. 2 seed Poca at 7 p.m. Thursday in the sectional semifinals.

LOGAN 71, SCOTT 61: David Early scored 26 and Drew Hatfield 25 as the Wildcats (20-3) beat the Skyhawks (16-8) in the Class AA, Region 4, Section 2 tournament. Jagger Bell led Scott with 26 points. John John Hamilton scored 20. Logan plays Chapmanville on Friday at Mingo Central.

LOGAN 12 22 14 23 — 71: David Early 26, Drew Hatfield 25, Noe 4, Hayner 7, Devin Hatfield 9.

BOYD COUNTY 74, RACELAND 72: Blake Stewart scored 31 points to lead the Lions over the Rams in double overtime in the Kentucky 16th Region tournament at Ellis T. Johnson Arena at Morehead State University. Boyd County came back from an 11-point deficit in the second half. Brad Newsome scored 10 and Jonathan Hicks 10. The Lions advance to Friday’s next round vs. Rowan County.

COAL GROVE 70, FEDERAL HOCKING 42: The Hornets (17-6) outscored the Lancers 46-17 in the second half to win a Division IV sectional championship at Meigs High School. Coal Grove plays Leesburg Fairfield at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the district semifinals at Ohio University’s Convocation Center in Athens.

Cory Borders led the Hornets with 25 points. Aaron Musick scored 17. Wes Carpenter paced the Lancers (6-18) with 11 points.

LEESBURG FAIRFIELD 57, IRONTON ST. JOE 39: Sam Buddlemeyer scored 21 to pace the Lions (12-10) to a triumph over the Flyers (14-9) in a Division IV sectional final at Northwest High School in McDermott, Ohio. Wyatt Wiley scored 14 and Bryson Simmons 11. Jimmy Mahlmeister led St. Joe with 10 points.

POINT PLEASANT 75, SISSONVILLE 74: The home-standing Big Blacks (8-15) rallied from an 18-point deficit with 2:53 left to edge the Indians (4-18) in the Class AA, Region IV, Section 1 tournament. Kyelar Morrow made two 3-pointers in the final 22 seconds to win it. Point Pleasant advances to the finals at 7 p.m. Thursday at Nitro.

Hunter Bush led the Big Blacks with 31 points. Morrow scored 28 and Braxton Yates 11.
