Happy Dog to host Bobby Womack birthday show and dance party

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- I could roll out a Top 100 Favorite Cleveland Musicians list. Or, even better (and easier), I can just tell you that two of them are going to be at the Happy Dog on Friday -- one in person, the other in spirit.

Give it up for Lawrence Caswell, as he pays tribute to the music of Bobby Womack.

The musician and DJ will perform a set of songs by Womack to celebrate his birthday. The Cleveland-born singer, guitarist songwriter – who died June 27, 2014 -- would’ve have been 74 on March 4.

Of course, Caswell will also celebrate his rich musical legacy. Womack, the son of a steelworker who grew up in Cleveland’s Central Avenue neighborhood, penned one of the Rolling Stones earliest hits, “It’s All Over Now.” He also wrote songs for Wilson Pickett and Janis Joplin, backed up Sam Cooke and launched a solo career that reached its peak in the 1970s. In 2009, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Caswell will perform Womack’s tunes from 9-10 p.m., backed by Ed Sotelo on guitar. At 10 p.m., he will roll out his popular R&B dance party.

Admission is free and, yes, the party is at the Happy Dog, 5801 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland. Go to happydogcleveland.com or call 216-651-9474.
