Police: Mother stabs daughter, holds officers at bay
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ A woman tied up, gagged and blindfolded her 2-year-old daughter, repeatedly stabbed her, then threw her out her second-story window into a neighbor’s yard, police said.
Shahidah Nimat El-Amin refused to surrender for more than three hours Thursday after the early afternoon attack, police said. Finally, officers tossed a stun grenade into the 21-year-old woman’s apartment and she was arrested.
The little girl, Nimat Aretha Allen, was listed in critical but stable condition this morning at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, a nursing supervisor said. She had been stabbed seven times in the chest, back and buttocks.
``I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing,″ said Mike Krajewski, maintenance supervisor at the Liddonfield Homes public housing project, where the mother and child lived.
Reaching the girl first, he cut a cord from her neck and pulled the blindfold from her tear-filled eyes. ``We’re here to help you,″ Krajewski said he told the child as he covered her naked body with a blanket.
Police said Ms. El-Amin threw a knife and other objects at officers from her window as they arrived on the scene.
