Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert on Monday endorsed former State Board of Education member Bob Evnen in the Republican primary to replace John Gale as Nebraska’s Secretary of State.

Evnen has said that, if elected Nebraska’s chief elections officer, he would advocate for a voter ID law to protect the integrity of elections. He has also said he would put public safety first in his Board of Pardons decisions.

“Bob Evnen is a man of strong principles and conservative values,” Stothert said in a statement. “I have always valued his viewpoint on policy matters.”

Evnen served eight years on the State Board of Education, from 2005-2013. He’s a business, labor and employment lawyer in Lincoln.

His long list of Republican supporters include Gov. Pete Ricketts, U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, Reps. Don Bacon, Jeff Fortenberry and Adrian Smith, as well as former Govs. Kay Orr and Dave Heineman.

More GOP officeholders have been making their support of Evnen known since a Republican challenger emerged: Debra Perrell from Hershey, Nebraska.
