Downtown coffee shop owner stabbed in apparent altercation at the businesses

December 5, 2017 GMT

An owner of a downtown coffee shop was stabbed in or near the business Monday night.

The Coffee Tavern, which opened at Second Avenue North and North 29th Street about a year ago, was cordoned off in yellow police tape after the stabbing was reported just before 9 p.m.

Police arrested a man and a woman shortly after arriving on the scene, said Billings Police Department Sgt. Matt Lennick.

A man was taken to the hospital with at least one stab wound to the chest. Police did not comment on the severity of his injuries.

“It sounds like it started off as some sort of disturbance here at the business,” Lennick said.

The Coffee Tavern has multiple owners.

It was unclear exactly where the stabbing took place, Lennick said, as there was blood inside and outside the business. Police recovered a knife believed to be used in the crime, but Lennick was unsure of any details about it.
