Dr. Stewart’s runs off against Vancouver as Lucido scores from first, 3-2
EUGENE — Luke Lucido got one at bat against Vancouver on Saturday afternoon in the Grant Smith Wood Bat Tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium.
Lucido made it count, punching through a leadoff single in the bottom of the eighth and then coming around to score when Sam Malychewski threw away Cade Meisner’s sacrifice bunt attempt. That gave the pinch-hitter plenty of time to sprint around the bases and give Dr. Stewart’s a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
Zack Mandera went the distance on the hill for the Docs, striking out three, walking two and scattering seven hits.
A 2018 Roseburg High graduate, Lucido missed most of the high school season while recuperating from complete reconstruction of his right shoulder. His role for the summer is to be a designated hitter and/or pinch-hitter, and it was the latter role he fulfilled perfectly against Vancouver.
Runs were at a premium against Vancouver, and the Mavericks led for almost half the game. Vancouver took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first and extended it to 2-0 in the top of the fourth.
The Docs finally broke through against Mavericks starter Jensen Bowen, with Jonathan Stone hitting a double and scoring on Brody Black’s single. Black reached second on a throwing error, then scored on Meisner’s single.
The Docs were to play the Eugene Challengers later Saturday night.
