Judo Star Dies of Heart Attack; Diet Blamed
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ South Korean judo star Chung Se-hoon died of a heart attack apparently brought on by a crash diet, sports officials said Wednesday.
The attack was believed to have been triggered by an excessive weight loss program, said officials at the Taerung sports facility, where Olympic hopefuls are training.
Chung, 22, fell unconscious Tuesday after a hot sauna, taken after a midnight jog. He died en route to a hospital, they said.
Chung, the winner of the men’s 65-kilogram title at last year’s University Games in Japan, had been South Korea’s hopeful for a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta this year.
He had been on a crash diet to lose 18 pounds to meet a weight check for judo team members on Tuesday.
