‘The Magic of Motown’: Tribute show features memorable music, party, on New Year’s Eve
The Downtown Cabaret Theatre in Bridgeport offers one-stop shopping for those looking to ring in the new year with a party featuring live music and dancing. That’s because the “Magic of Motown” show will be there on Monday, Dec. 31.
This dynamic tribute show covers more than a decade of Motown classics, delivered by five talented vocalists who also perform choreographed dance moves.
The singers (four males and a female) deliver great harmonies and are accompanied by a six-piece band. And this band is a show in itself, with musicians who have backed up or opened for many of the original Motown artists.
“Magic of Motown” has been performed across the United States and internationally. (Audience members have included the king and queen of Denmark.)
Denny Mendes, who toured with The Temptations and James Brown, is among the vocalists. The other guys are Donald McCall, whose falsetto has taken him around the globe with such groups as The G Clefs and The Secrets; Arthur “AJ Smooth” Jefferson, who is known for his warm vocal renditions of Motown hits; and Steven Wood, who sang with Richard Street’s (Temptations) Legacy Tour.
Evelyn Dillion, the lone female vocalist, joined “Magic of Motown” about two years ago, according to the theater. She often earns standing ovations when performing songs made famous by such legends as Gladys Knight and Martha Reeves. Dillion has also appeared in many productions, from “Smokey Joe’s Café” to “Dream Girls.”
Aside from the concert and dancing, admission to this New Year’s Eve celebration includes parking, party favors, concessions, noise makers, a balloon drop, and coffee and danish. The event is BYOB and you may bring your own food, if you like.
