KEW MEDIA GROUP Companies Score 40 Canadian Screen Award Nominations
TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb 11, 2019--KEW MEDIA GROUP INC. (“KEW” or the “Company”) (TSX:KEW and KEW.WT), is pleased to announce its group of companies has garnered 40 Canadian Screen Award (“CSA”) nominations, showing strong recognition of KEW’s diverse range of multi-genre content for Canadian and international audiences. The CSAs are awarded annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and celebrate excellence in the Canadian screen-based industry.
Sienna Films (“Sienna”) leads the pack with 16 nominations including Best Limited Series or Program, Best Direction, Lead Actor and Actress for their hit show, Cardinal: Blackfly Season (on CTV in Canada and Hulu in the U.S.). Cardinal is beginning production on its 4 th season, which will air in 2020. Sienna’s other returning drama Ransom (CBS in the U.S. and Global in Canada) also received two nominations. The third season of Ransom returns February 16 th.
Frantic Films followed with an impressive 11 nominations for its hit series, Baroness Von Sketch Show (CBC in Canada and IFC in the U.S), Still Standing (CBC), and The Writers Block (CBC). The Baroness Von Sketch Show, now in its fourth season, was nominated for five awards including Best Sketch Comedy Show & Ensemble Performance, Best Direction, and Best Writing for Variety or Sketch Comedy. Still Standing, now in its fourth season, was nominated for Best Factual Series and Best Host in a Program or Series for Jonny Harris, among others.
Kew Media Distribution’s (KMD) Shaftesbury Production-produced drama series, Frankie Drake Mysteries, was nominated in five categories including Best Drama Series and Best Direction. The show, currently in its second season on CBC, has been a ratings hit, finishing off 2018 as the network’s third most watched show. Another KMD title, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco (ITV in the UK, City TV in Canada and Britbox in the U.S.), also received one nomination for Best Supporting Actress, Drama.
On the non-fiction side, Media Headquarters’ new spin-off of its original format, Canada’s Smartest Person Junior (for CBC), was nominated for three awards including Best Reality/Competition Program or Series while Architect Films’ returning hit series Home to Win, now in its third season on HGTV in Canada, was nominated for Best Lifestyle Program or Series and Best Direction in a Lifestyle Program.
Bristow Global Media’s 100 Days to Victory (Corus Entertainment’s HISTORY® in Canada and Foxtel’s The History Channel in Australia and New Zealand, as well as BBC Scotland) garnered two nominations for Best History Documentary Program or Series and Best Direction in a Documentary Program. The show, which is distributed by KMD, launched at MIPCOM in 2018 and has been generating strong international sales.
