Body of missing boater recovered in L.I Sound
Two men were killed in a boating accident on Long Island Sound Sunday after a 32-boot boat struck a breakwater in New Haven Harbor.
A good Samaritan reported the vessel was found overturned and damaged near the west breakwall in New Haven Harbor at approximately 9:15 a.m. Sunday.
The Coast Guard found an unresponsive man on the rocks of the breakwall, later to be determined as a passenger of the capsized vessel. The man has not been identified.
The seach for the second person on board the boat ended around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when Connecticut State Police dive unit located a body, identified as Michael Murphy, 53.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the two men who perished,” said Capt. Andrew Tucci, commander Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.. “We are grateful to the emergency responders who assisted in the search efforts.”
The command center issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a 45-foot boat from Coast Guard Station New Haven. West Haven and Milford marine units joimed the search.
A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Cape Cod was involved in the search that covered approximately 61-square nautical miles.
