Police: Wyoming Woman Gave Teen Pot, Fondled Her
COURTDALE — A Wyoming woman is facing child sex charges after police say she gave a 14-year-old girl marijuana and fondled her in a van.
Talyia Popovich, 21, of 14 Kennedy St., is accused of touching the girl while parked in the van along a dead-end street Friday night.
According to a police affidavit, officers responded to Corby Road around 7:45 p.m. Friday to a report of a van that had been parking in the area in recent days, with occupants who had left behind trash.
Police arrived to find the van smelling of marijuana with Popovich and a 14-year-old girl inside, according to the charges.
Popovich, who was in the driver’s seat, turned over a marijuana pipe and admitted to smoking pot with her teenage companion, police said. Officers seized two marijuana blunt roaches, Zig-Zag rolling papers and a loose chunk of marijuana, according to police.
The 14-year-old girl told police that they had smoked marijuana and that Popovich had fondled her, police said. The girl insisted that the contact was consensual and that she was not held against her will, according to the charges.
Police brought the teen to her father, who said he suspected something had been going on between his daughter and Popovich and that he had warned the girl several times that their age difference could cause trouble, police said.
Police charged Popovich with aggravated indecent assault, corruption of a minor, and possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana.
Magisterial District Judge Michael G. Dotzel arraigned Popovich on Saturday morning and ordered her jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility with bail set at $75,000.
A preliminary hearing was set for May 22.
