Australian para-snowboarder dies during air-lift
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The Australian Paralympic Committee says Australian snowboarder Matthew Robinson died while being transported home after a race crash in Spain.
Robinson sustained neck and spinal injuries in a race accident on Feb. 12 while competing at the IPC World Cup finals in La Molina, Spain.
The APC on Friday said after spending eight days in hospital in Barcelona, Robinson was cleared by medical staff to be transported back to Melbourne by air ambulance. But he suffered a cardiac arrest during a refueling stop in Kuwait and died.
Snowboarding will be part of the Paralympics for the first time this year at the Sochi Games which open March 7. Robinson was not on the Australian team because his classification isn’t on the games program.
