Man killed by Tennessee police responding to prowler call
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities in Tennessee say a man has been killed by officers responding to a report of a prowler.
Antonio Smith, 51, was killed late Thursday, news outlets report. Memphis officers responding to the call heard a nearby disturbance between three people and approached them, according to a state Bureau of Investigation statement.
One of the men in the group was armed and failed to comply with officer demands, it says. Thing escalated and the officers shot and killed the man, it says.
The state Bureau of Investigation is investigating. Authorities didn’t immediately release the identities of the involved officers.
The same working-class Memphis neighborhood was the scene of a police shooting over the summer that led to a tense clash between authorities and residents, who threw bricks and rocks in protest of the shooting of Brandon Webber. Authorities have said they were attempting to arrest Webber in the Frayser neighborhood when he resisted and rammed a car into police vehicles before exiting with a weapon.
