Luther Prep comes up short against LCL

November 30, 2018 GMT

HARTLAND — The Luther Prep boys basketball team entered its first game of the season with only one player who had played significant varsity minutes.

The team showed resolve throughout its opener but fell short against host Lake Country Lutheran 75-61 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.

LCL jumped out to an 11-4 advantage before Phoenix senior wing Micah Kieselhorst connected on a 3-pointer.

Luther Prep’s junior Nathan de Galley made two free throws with 14 minutes remaining to cut the lead to 44-40. LCL instantly went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 12 with 11:30 to play.

Kieselhorst connected from long range to get the Phoenix within five points at 60-55 with five minutes to play. LCL scored on back-to-back possessions with Bryce Haertle finishing off a three-point play and Joey Bratz making a three-pointer to extend the lead to 66-55.

“I thought our guys were very resilient,” Luther Prep coach Nate Kieselhorst said. “We made some bone-headed mistakes that cost us. (We) cut the lead to four with nine minutes to play. I was happy with our guys overall. They stayed competitive and fought through the nervous jitters.”

Lake Country shot 12 for 28 from three-point range and relied on the long ball to stave off the Phoenix’s rally efforts.

“We weren’t in sync at times which was partly due to their physicality,” coach Kieselhorst said. “We didn’t keep our spacing like we had been practicing. We would have these runs where things would start to click and guys were focused. It just wasn’t consistent enough.”

Micah Kieselhorst made three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. De Galley tallied 16 points and show confidence driving to the basket.

Two Luther Prep starters, Alex Lawrence and Malachi Roeseler, were saddled with foul trouble which led to 10 players seeing game action. Coach Kieselhorst credited the reserves for holding their own on the floor.

LCL’s dribble-drive game was effective and Haertle, Zech Hans and Bratz each made three 3-pointers.

“We’ll learn from it,” coach Kieselhorst said. “That’s what I told the guys ... We’re looking forward to having a short memory and going at it on Friday.”

Luther Prep will play host to Marshall on Friday night.
