Emergence of Grant is topic of Civil War session
Ulysses S. Grant’s rapid rise from obscurity to the headlines will be the topic of the next meeting of the Rochester Civil War Round Table at 7 p.m. June 13 at the History Center of Olmsted County, 1195 West Circle Drive SW, Rochester.
Jim Ward will present the program, “General Grant...from Galena to Shiloh.” Galena, Ill., is where Grant lived, relatively unknown, at the outbreak of the war. Less than a year later, by the time of the battle of Shiloh, April 6 and 7, 1862, Grant’s name was known across the country as one of the few Union generals able to win battles.
The meeting is open to the public.
