Irish Priest Killed in Uganda
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) _ A Ugandan military court will charge two soldiers with murder for the slaying of an Irish priest and the men will be executed immediately if convicted, a military spokesman said Monday.
Maj. Shaban Bantariza said a corporal and a private were arrested over the weekend for allegedly gunning down Father Michael O’Toole Delan Wednesday night in the northeastern town of Kotido, 250 miles from the capital Kampala.
``The two have been arrested and are to be charged with murder either today or at the latest tomorrow morning. The army court is to try them in the area where the crime was committed. It will be a field court martial,″ Bantariza said, adding that there was no chance for appeal.
``Once found guilty, their commanders will carry out the execution immediately,″ he said.
Bantariza would not speculate on a motive for the slaying, but it appeared to be an attempted robbery.
Delan was a member of the Mill Hill missionary order based in Uganda.
