Georgia city stalls plan to make mayor’s post full-time

May 14, 2019

GROVETOWN, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia city says it needs more time to flesh out the details of whether the job of mayor should change to full-time with a salary increase.

The Augusta Chronicle reports the issue was pulled from Monday’s regular city council meeting agenda because Grovetown Mayor Gary Jones said he felt he did not have enough support.

Had it been approved, the mayor’s salary would increase to $65,000 as of Jan. 1. Currently, the position is considered part-time with an annual salary of $10,200.

Jones says the council questioned whether they were moving too fast.

The move to make the mayor full-time came as the city’s population expands and as the city recovers from a nearly $1 million in theft over the last five years.
