Family Time: Walk helps Ronald McDonald House serve more
Walk to raise funds and awareness for the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester.
Part of the larger Scheels Med City Marathon lineup of events (marathon, Kids K, Diaper Dash), the Ronald McDonald House Family Walk is a family-friendly, 2-mile walk sponsored by Data-Smart Computers & Telecommunications.
“The RMHMN Family Walk is an opportunity for families to spend time together walking for a good cause and a pair of our signature red and white striped socks,” said Angela Christensen, RMHMN Development Officer.
Families can register online through Friday, $10 for adults, free for children younger than 18. Onsite registration is available, $15 for adults, free for children younger than 18.
“Nearly 200 members of our community participate in this event each year, supporting the families who call the Ronald McDonald House Home,” said Christensen. “The course is stroller, wheel-chair and family friendly.”
Money raised at the event goes to support RMHMN general operations. In 2017, RMH hosted 761 families. The average length of stay was 17 days, up from 14 in 2016. Families from across the state, country and world come to stay at the RMH while getting treatment at Mayo Clinic. “The actual cost to host a family is $83 per night, and while we ask families for $15 a night, we never turn anyone away due to inability to pay. The RMHMN Family Walk helps make this possible.”
“Last year we had to turn away over 1,000 families,” said Christensen. “With our planned expansion (which broke ground earlier this month) we’ll increase from 42 to 70 rooms, add indoor and outdoor play areas for families and children, and be able to host 1,500 families a year.”
