Circus Elephant Goes On Rampage

September 17, 1987

GENEVA (AP) _ A circus elephant being led to a publicity stunt seriously injured a woman passerby when he bolted from his trainer after a dog started barking, police said.

Witnesses said the 45-year-old woman was rammed by the female elephant when it charged away from its guide Tuesday and scrambled back to the sanctuary of its cage.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital with multiple fractures, police spokesman Jean-Claude Ducrot said Wednesday.

The elephant is part of Circus Knie, Switzerland’s best-known traveling show, which is performing this week at a fairground in central Geneva.

The giant mammal was en route to star in an event a few hundred yards away staged by an group promoting young local artists, the Swiss newspaper Le Matin reported.
