Area track: Local athletes shine in star-studded meet

April 21, 2018 GMT

There’s little change in the pecking order in the world of track and field – at least at the area meet involving Districts 23-6A and 24-6A.

Meet favorites Dawson (boys) and Dickinson (girls) captured team titles Thursday night while Alvin’s Kynnedy Flannel did her thing by winning three events (100 meters, 200 meters and long jump) at Pearland Stadium.

While Dawson won the boys’ title with 105 points over Pearland, Dickinson captured the girls’ crown with 98 points.

Leading the way for the Dawson girls was freshman Chrystal Herpin who won the discus with a throw of 139-7, edging sister Victoria (127-1), while also claiming the shot put crown with an effort of 41-9, to nip teammate Kalynn Broadnax (38-7).

“I’m doing OK considering since I threw 150, we’ve changed my technique,” Herpin said. “As I get used to it, I’ll get more consistent.

“Instead of starting off long, I’m more compact. When I come back around for my opening, I’ll have more reach to get more torque. As I come to terms with it, it’s starting to become muscle memory.

“It was nice to win, but I’m way more proud of my sister qualifying for regional.”

Friendswood’s Michael Hermes, who qualified for state last year in the high jump, won the area crown by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches.

“It’s always good to clear that first jump to secure it,” Hermes said. “I was trying to PR (personal record), but I think I forgot to kick at the end.

“Last year, I played basketball and this year I didn’t, and I think that’s impacted (negatively) my jumping. When I played basketball, I would practice dunks, windmilling, and things like that.

“My arch is pretty good this year, but I just need a lot of reps. Repetitions are everything. I know I can go 6-8 or higher.”

Clear Falls’ Briana Garcia cruised to a victory by almost two seconds in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.88, but it was far from her best effort.

“I’ve been sick all week, and the pollen out here is crazy,” she said. “This race was not my best, and I struggled at the end.

“I heard one girl hit the hurdle, and that kind of got in my head. I’m glad I’m making it to regionals, but I don’t know if I’ll have a good slot time.

“I’ve run a 43.5 so I’ll just do some speed work as well as work on my endurance. I know I need to get at least a second faster to have a chance at getting to state.”

Dawson sprinter Jacolby Shelton blazed to a winning time of 10.44 in the 100 meters and was second in the 200 meters with a 21.22 clocking.

“The 100 is something I focus on the most,” Shelton said. “This race, overall, was great. Some people are fast after 40 meters and some have quick starts.

“I’ve been blessed that my top end speed is something special. It’s a straight race and you just go. The 200 is a little different.”

Alvin’s Flannel dominated in winning the 100 (11.74 seconds), the 200 meters (23.9 seconds) and the long jump (19 feet, 2 inches).
