Darlington’s Reindeer Run 5K chilly but fun

DARLINGTON, S.C. – The city of Darlington heard the sound of bells jingling Saturday morning during the Reindeer Run 5K.

The Reindeer Run 5K, an event put on by the Darlington Family YMCA, featured several dozen runners and walkers who stepped out in chilly conditions for some early morning exercise.

The route took them around the Darlington Public Square, past St. John’s Church and back to Exchange Street in front of the Darlington Family YMCA.

Brooke Humphries, race director, said this is the 12th year that the YMCA has put on the event.

“We have several sponsors and any proceeds from the race go to scholarships for our after-school care,” Humphries said.

Humphries said the after-school program picks up kids from school from ages 5-12 and allow the parents a place for childcare while they finish up the work day. Humphries said the scholarships allow up to half off their child care.

“What I love about this race in particular is that it’s community,” Humphries said. “We know a lot of the people that show up and it’s just something that I look forward to. It’s just a fun day to get out and get some exercise early in the morning.”
