New York Giants draft quarterback Daniel Jones No. 6 overall

April 26, 2019 GMT

The New York Giants drafted Duke quarterback Daniel Jones No. 6 overall in the 2019 NFL draft, apparently choosing the heir to the starting job after the Eli Manning era is over.

The Washington Redskins’ NFC East rival also had another pick in the first round Thursday night at No. 17 overall, but the Giants did not wait to pick their future quarterback.

Some draft analysts linked Jones to Washington, but the Giants drafted him higher than most mock drafts predicted he would go.

Jones rather than Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins or Missouri’s Drew Lock was the second quarterback off the board, after the Arizona Cardinals took Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Kyler Murray first overall.

ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. mocked Jones to the Giantsat No. 17, not No. 6.

Manning has not indicated any plans to retire before the 2019 season, so it’s unknown when Jones will take over starting duties for Big Blue.
