Elyria man attacks State Highway Patrol trooper in LaGrange Township, authorities say

LAGRANGE TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 44-year-old man injured a State Highway Patrol trooper during a scuffle Thursday morning, authorities say.

Cornelius Carey Jr. of Elyria is charged with felonious assault in the incident that started about 6:45 a.m. on Diagonal Road just north of Biggs Road, according to a news release from Highway Patrol. The trooper was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A woman called the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and said that Carey, who appeared drunk, was walking in the road, according to a 911 call. She told a dispatcher she was afraid he was going to get hit by a car.

A trooper searched for Carey and found him about 7:15 a.m. Carey got confrontational and struck the trooper in the face.

Another woman later called the Sheriff’s Office to report that Carey and the trooper were wrestling in the middle of the road. The two fought for several minutes until additional officers arrived.

A third person called and said Carey had the trooper in a choke hold, but later had him under control and in handcuffs, according to the 911 call.

“The officer’s all bloody on his face,” the woman tearfully said to the dispatcher. “Please send somebody.”

The trooper, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital. The trooper’s condition was not immediately available.
