Tribute honors 9/11 victims, fallen first responders
An annual remembrance event will pay tribute to fallen officers and first responders at Memorial Gardens Park at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
Prosperity Bank and the City of Odessa will have a ceremony followed by the placement of 3,000 flags around the pond, the city’s website states.
“Each flag represents a fallen officer or first responder,” Recreation and Special Events Coordinator Cori Branscum of Odessa Parks and Recreation said.
The event is open to the public and the flag display will be available for viewing until Sept. 17.
Branscum said the itinerary includes an invocation from Dr. Griffin Jones, pastor at CrossRoads Fellowship Baptist Church, a patriotic melody from Odessa Fire Rescue Pipes and Drums Corps and more.
Odessa Parks and Recreation Director Steve Patton said the flag display is different from many others he has seen throughout the state because Memorial Gardens Park allows the grand scale of 3,000 flags to be viewed all at once, while simultaneously gazing at their reflection in the water.
