Man gets 45 years after shooting, paralyzing then-girlfriend
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana man who shot his then-girlfriend as she took a bath and paralyzed her has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.
The Advocate reports that 48-year-old Carl Thompson II was sentenced Tuesday after being convicted of attempted second-degree murder in August.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III has called the 2017 shooting of Angela Gabriel “an act of cowardice.” It followed an argument Thompson had with Gabriel over using a nasal aspirator to suction the nose of one of their children.
Gabriel told a jury she thought she was going to die as she lay bleeding in her bathtub after Thompson shot her multiple times. Six shell casings were recovered at the shooting scene, including five from Gabriel’s bathtub.
This story has been corrected to show the correct tense of lay in the first sentence of the last paragraph.
