Man tries to pepper-spray Cleveland strip club employee in robbery attempt

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 49-year-old man is accused of pepper-spraying a strip club employee and robbing the business of a tip jar before being tackled by security guards, police say.

The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christie’s strip club in the Flats.

The man, who was arrested but has not yet been formally charged, tried to walk into the club about midnight, police reports say. The 26-year-old woman checking identification cards denied him entry to the club because he didn’t have an ID card, police reports say.

He walked into the parking lot and started lifting several car door handles, police reports say. The woman notified security guards at the club, but they weren’t able to find him.

He returned about an hour later. The woman said she was looking in another direction when the man walked in, said “hey girl,” and shot pepper spray at her when she looked up, police reports say.

The pepper spray missed the woman’s face and hit her shirt, police reports say. The man grabbed the woman’s tip jar that had $108 inside and ran out of the building, police reports say.

The security guards ran after him and found him hiding behind a statue. The guards grabbed him and the man shot pepper spray at them, but missed, according to police reports.

The guards held the man down until police arrived and arrested him. The man was treated and released at Lutheran Hospital for unspecified injuries and taken to the Cuyahoga County Jail.
